Room Buddies and Red Flags: Watch out for These!

Don’t get me wrong, travelling with your pals can be the greatest experience of your life, but you’ll soon find out which room buddies you’d rather have stayed at home. If you want your trip to be smooth sailing, consider these red flags before setting off on your travels.

Terrible Communication

One of the most crucial aspects of travelling with room buddies is effective communication. If your potential travel buddy doesn’t respond after weeks of nagging or never contributes to planning, it could be your first sign this trip is about to go south! Look out for signs of poor communication skills before committing to travelling together. Even our closest friends can be our worst enemies when push comes to shove.

Bad Budgeting

Take it from me, money is the single most important thing to consider, especially when travelling. You are bound to find room buddies who are constantly borrowing money, or being financially irresponsible and this will create tension and strain your travel plans. Make sure your potential travel companion is financially responsible and capable of sticking to a budget to avoid the biggest fights down the road.

Lack of Accountability

Along your journey, you will face unexpected situations that no amount of planning could have prepared you for. We can’t stress this enough – do NOT travel with people who blame others for their mistakes, avoid taking responsibility, or fail to follow through on commitments. It’s a surefire way to make an otherwise sweet trip turn sour. Choose someone who’s not scared to take accountability and can be relied on when mistakes are made.

They’re Messy

We all have that one friend who lives amongst piles of clothes day-in-day-out. If you choose to be room buddies with someone who neglects personal hygiene or couldn’t care less about your shared space, it’s going to be difficult to relax and enjoy your surroundings. Remember, you’re going to be living side by side with this person in hostels, hotels, and many many airports. Choose wisely.

The room buddy can make all the difference in your travel experience. Take the time to evaluate your potential travel companions carefully and prioritise compatibility for a memorable and stress-free adventure.
